Gum disease prevention at Jarvis Family Dental

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is a common infection of the gums that can vary in levels of seriousness and severity. The two types that are most often found in patients are gingivitis and periodontitis.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. Symptoms include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swelling of the gums
  • Sensitivity of the gums, particularly with hot or cold food and drinks

Gingivitis can be prevented by a strict regimen of regular brushing and flossing, as well as the use of antibacterial or antiseptic mouthwash.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis, or periodontal disease, is caused by severe cases of gum inflammation from bacterial buildup. Left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, extreme recession of the gums, infection of the gums and tissue, general pain, ulcers and mouth cancer.
